Indigenous history Camrose is located in a travelling route and home to the Maskwacis Nêhiyawak, Niitsitapi, Nakoda, and Tsuut'ina Nations, the Métis, and other Indigenous peoples. Their spiritual and practical relationships to the land create a rich heritage for our learning and our life as a community. Dried Meat Lake, which is the water source for the City of Camrose, holds historical significance to the First Nations and Metis in this area. People would combine bison meat with berries to make pemmican as the Saskatoon bushes grow abundantly in this region. Settlers in the early 1900s The Camrose railway depot was constructed in 1911 following the completion of the railway connecting Camrose to Vegreville in April of 1910. Freight service began in November of 1910 through Camrose and was followed by passenger services beginning in 1912. The freight line primarily transported agricultural products like grain and cattle as well as coal. Early recreation & industry Many early homesteaders were from Sweden and Norway and skiing became a popular past-time that continues today. Camrose was first known as Stoney Creek (named after the creek flowing through the city) and incorporated as Sparling in 1905. Due to similar town names elsewhere and confusion with mail deliveries, the town was incorporated as Camrose in 1906. The Camrose community formed around the bustling railway hub and the agriculture industry thrived due to the fertile soil and plentiful precipitation. The swans Swans were a staple of Camrose as they swam around Mirror Lake during the summer and raised young. 2019 marked the end of an era as the City of Camrose discontinued hosting the swans over winter due to ethical concerns. When the swans left Mirror Lake, this allowed the possibility of taking non-motorized boats on the lake for recreation and pleasure. Paddle on Mirror Lake Swans

Well, there's one in the Visitor Information Centre that is over 5 meters (17 feet) long and 2 meters (7 feet) wide and is less than half the size of a real longship. This replica longship was a gift to the City from the University of Alberta's Augustana Campus. The Viking boat is an homage to the rich Scandinavian heritage of the community that settled Camrose/Sparling area in the early 1900s. On January 30, 1985, Olaus Straumsnes came to Camrose from Telemark, Norway to construct a replica of an authentic Viking longship for Augustana. Olaus was trained at the båtbyggerskole (boat building school) in Hardanger. He completed the build in less than 4 months. The keel section is made of oak, the gunwhales are pine, the ribs are fir and the benches are spruce. The boat was tested and successfully voyaged around Mirror Lake in 1985. This iconic hill in Stoney Creek Park was the site of ski jumping, cross country skiing, and luge. Camrose Ski Hill Just so you know Difficulty Duration When Easy 1-3 hours Year round 780.672.4217 Stoney Creek Park Website This iconic hill in Stoney Creek Park was the site of ski jumping, cross country skiing, and luge. The ski hill in Camrose was the site ski jumping. By 1911, local Scandinavian settlers had constructed a 50 foot tower and held their first jumping competition in 1912. Skis were made of hickory or oak with a traditional Norwegian binding. The original ski jump was replaced several times throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The ski jump was rebuilt again in 1965 but later dismantled in the late 1960s. Another jump was constructed of welded pipes and a wooden slide surface in preparation of hosting the 1990 Alberta Winter Games. Modern day ski jumpers go much farther than historically making the Stoney Creek Valley unsuitable for hosting ski jumping competitions. In 2016, this jump was dismantled marking the end of an era. The ski hill has several challenging cross country ski trails that people can classic or skate ski up and down. The face of the ski hill is also a popular tobogganing place as the groomed surface makes for an excellent sliding experience. Explore the map
