Winter at Miquelon: Embrace the Darkside

Winters in Camrose can be long and cold. We can complain about it, or we can get out and have some fun! Luckily, Alberta Parks would love to welcome you to Miquelon Lake Provincial Park this winter, and they have a whole host of activities to embrace the winter weather and long nights.

Skating Rink

Lace up your skates at Miquelon! Practice your spins, shoot a puck, or take a few laps around the outdoor skating rink. Built in the parking lot by the Visitor Information Centre, the rink is dependent on the weather.  Visiting after sundown? Bring your headlamp – there are no lights illuminating the rink.

Make sure to check the trail report to see if the skating rink is open.

Winter Trails

With 10 different trail systems encompassing almost 20km of trails, there are endless winter trail options at Miquelon. From snowshoeing and hiking to fat biking and e-biking to cross-country skiing and skijoring, Miquelon has something for everyone.

Visit the Miquelon Lake Trail Report to learn more and ensure the trails are open.

Tip: Looking for more cross-country ski trails? Visit Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, the home of the Canadian Birkebeiner.

Fire Pits

Whether you have been skating, hiking or skiing, you can enjoy a fire in fire pits at the first-come, first- served picnic areas or beside the skating rink. Remember to bring your own firewood and fire-starting materials. The Visitor Information Centre is closed throughout the winter and there is no wood available to purchase.

Bring a thermos of hot chocolate or make your own over the fire!

Winter Camping

Did you know that you can still camp in the winter?! Camping at Miquelon's Loop A remains open for any hardcore campers who would prefer to avoid the mosquitos and crowds and enjoy the winter wonderland.  Park staff keep a few campsites plowed of snow. Camping in the winter months is self-registration only, so bring cash.

Remember the old adage – there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.  Be sure to check the weather forecast and come prepared with many layers.

All day use areas at Miquelon close at 11pm. Before you head out, always check for any advisories that may impact your visit.

Happy winter everyone!
